Description:This symposium stems from a conference on 'Gorbachev and Gorbachevism' held at the University of Glasgow in May 1988 under the auspices of the Department of Politics and the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies in association with The Journal of Communist Studies. The conference was intended to provide the opportunity for a critical examination of the experience of political, social and economic reform in the USSR since the accession of Mikhail Gorbachev, with particular reference to the period since the January 1987 Central Committee plenum at which the strategy of 'democratization' was inaugurated. Some 35 specialists from the United Kingdom, continental Europe and North America attended the conference. which at its successive sessions reviewed political reform; 'glasnost' and the media; the economy; the social nature of Gorbachevism; and international affairs.
