He is a professor of the Department of History and Non-Western Cultures at Western Connecticut State University. He is an outspoken critic of excessive power of the Supreme Court. His views have been characterized as libertarian, conservative, anti-Federalist, and pro-states' rights. Gutzman studied as an undergraduate, graduate, and professional school student at the University of Texas, completing his B.A. there in 1985, and earning his Master of Public Affairs and J.D. in 1990. He was a graduate student in history at the University of Virginia, where he received an M.A. in history in 1994 and a Ph.D. in 1999. Gutzman was, at one point, assistant professor of history at John Jay College of the City University of New York. He taught history at New College in Sarasota, Florida in March 2008. In 2009, he teaches at Western Connecticut State University. Gutzman's expertise is Constitutional history and the period of the American Revolutionary War.
