The Lindsay forefather in Virginia was Reverend David Lindsay of Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, who came to the colony before 1655. The line is traced mostly through his grandson, Opie Lindsay. This book contains some family inventories as well as interesting stories of emigration, Revolutionary War service, character and appearance, and names of children and spouses spanning nearly eight generations. The Appendix actually comprises more than half of the book, providing the reader with a wealth of information on Lindsays in other parts of Virginia, New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Nebraska. It also lists: places in the U.S. called Lindsay; postmasters of the Mane of Lindsay, in 1855; Lindsay grantees in Virginia from 1657 to 1766; Robert Lindsay of James Island, Virginia, 1623; and ninety variations in the spelling of the name. The book includes the Lindsay Coat of Arms and charts of the De Toeny ancestry, the Spottswood family, the Fairfax and Robertson families, and the descendants of Christiana de Lindsay.
