They 56 national parks, 57 national monuments (excluded were those of primarily historical interest) 4 national lakeshores, 11 national seashores, 19 national recreation areas, 6 national rivers or scenice riverways, 13 national preserves, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail-all administered by the Naitonal Park Service (NPS). 143 national forests, 19 national grasslands, and the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails-all administered by the Forest Service. 257 national wildlife refuges, with varying official names, that are open to the public. 76 areas of scenic and recreational interest within 46 Bureau of Land Management (BLM) districts. These less well known and often remote sites, administered for multiple uses, generally lack visitor facilities.
