Their religion was never recognized by the Jews, who treated them as even worse than heathen. To this semi-barbarous and disreputable people did this woman belong. Nationally, not a very promising subject for Grace. But when we inquire into what she was personally, she becomes still less attractive. Her history was a dark one: she had had five husbands. What became of all of them we do not know. Worse than that, she was now living with a man who was not her husband. She was the mistress of a paramour! Certainly she had fallen deeply into degradation and sin. There was not much left to appeal to. If a work of Grace is to be done in her heart, the seeds will have to be sown, the life implanted and the very foundations laid.
