Ernie Els went on to claim that title, and in the year's final major, the PGA Championship, little-known Rich Beem held off Woods by one stroke. Nevertheless, Woods led the U.S. PGA Tou for the fourth consecutive year and for the fifth time in six years. Going into October, Woods had five victories for the year on the PGA Tour and six overall. Phil Mickelson, the runner-up to Woods in the U.S. Open, also was second on the PGA Tour and second on the World Ranking. He had two victories for the year. Two South Africans, Els and Retief Goosen, were ranked third and fourth in the world, and Goosen led the European Tour money list for the second year in a row. Young Spaniard Sergio Garcia ranked fifth. Other headliners of the year included the victory by Europe, led by captain Sam Torrance and star of the match Colin Montgomerie, over the United States in the Ryder Cup.
