The essays and poems which are given for the first time in this edition have been printed from copies made by Mr. Alexander Ireland from the original manuscripts, and with the permission of Mr. Walter Leigh Hunt, to whom it seems most probable that the copyright belongs. Messrs. Routledge and Sons have kindly allowed me to include " A Coronation Soliloquy" (vol. ii., p. 76). The authorship of "The Walk in a Wood " (vol. i., p. 29), is indirectly proved by a footnote in one of Mrs. Carlyle's letters (vol. i., p. 104).
