Y The Separatists living in the vicinity of Scrooby, in the Hundred of Basset Lawe, in the county of N otting hamshire, included in their number William Brewster, later known as Elder Brewster, and William Bradford, who became the second governor of Plymouth Colony. The congregation had for its pastor, Richard Clifton. With him John Robinson, as junior pastor, was associ ated, who had been a clergyman in the Established Church near Norwich, being deprived for non-ritual ism. The meetings of the congregation did not long escape the attention of the informers, and as a conse quence the religious services Of the Separatists were thereafter secretly conducted. Finally, in the autumn of 1607, the congregation determined to ee to Holland. There were many other 'notable passages and trou bles which winnowed out the less courageous and stead fast of the fugitives, but drew in others. In various ways the constant ones were sent over to Amsterdam, the rear of the column being guarded by the brave patriarchs of the fiock, - Clifton, Robinson, and Brewster. A stay in England was especially dangerous for this Horatian three; but they held their ground until there were no more to be helped across, and then they followed.
