Nodena: An Account of 90 Years of Archeological Investigation in Southeast Mississippi County, Arkansas

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (27980 ratings)
Description:The primary purpose of this volume is to put on record the remarkable history of an investigation of an archeological site, Nodena. James K. Hampson began his investigation in 1897, and 75 years later the Arkansas Archeological Survey continues to collect artifacts from the site. Nodena is the type name for a rare painted pottery type (Nodena Red and White pottery) and a point type (Nodena point), and is the type site for a culture (Nodena phase.) Two public museums (University of Arkansas Museum and Alabama Museum of Natural History) have conducted excavations here. Dr. Hampson, one of the better known early amateur archeologists, conducted his own investigations and invited these museums to work at Nodena, because he was deeply concerned with cataloging and preserving as much information as possible. He worked closely with a number of well-known archeologists investigating the lower Mississippi Valley. His collection has been donated to the State of Arkansas and is housed in a small brick museum, the Henry Clay Hampson II Memorial Museum of Aechaeology, in Wilson, Arkansas. The Ndena Site is a National HIstoric Landmark. We have in the following pages been able only to hint at the wealth of information available in the collections made at Nodena. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
