Prevention of Floods in the Valley of Stony Brook: A Report by a Commission ... 1886 [Hardcover]

James Bicheno Francis Boston (Mass.). Stony Brook Commission
4.9/5 (11528 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Prevention of Floods in the Valley of Stony Brook: A Report by a Commission As shown on Plate I. the water-shed of Stony brook extends about seven miles, from within the town of Hyde Park, down to the Back Bay park in Boston, and comprises a total area of about 13.92 square miles. This area can again be divided into several subsidiary parts, tributary to the various branches or to different portions of the main stream. Stony brook is maintained by the rain which falls on this water-shed, and which reaches the stream either promptly through surface affluents, or more slowly through subterranean channels. During the summer droughts the flow diminishes to a fractional part of one cubic foot of water per second; during heavy freshets it may increase to a thousand or more cubic feet per second. The immediate channels of the main and principal tributary brooks are not, and never have been, large enough to contain the flow during freshets. At such times the brooks overflow their banks, and spread out over adjoining meadow-lands, which are covered from one to several feet deep. In the original state of the brook and before its surroundings had been modified by human agency, the variations of flow were not so great as at present.
