The question is, Is there such a thing as dominance? Does one character hold the stage in the first hybrid generation to the complete exclusion of its partner? If an affirmative answer cannot be given to these questions, what reason is there in discussing the causes determining dominance, a thing whose reality has not yet been established? But in the present case it is desirable to present a consistent scheme of the whole set of phenomena, and then to consider to what extent it is justified. Let us take the first pair of characters, cotyledon shape. If we content ourselves, as the impressionist does, with the mere impression produced on the unaided eye, the answer to the question in regard to the existence of dominance is an unqualified affirmative. A round is crossed with a wrinkled, and the hybrid is a round, indistinguishable from the pure parent round. But if we refuse to be content with this impressionist aspect, and set about to find out as much as possible about the true nature of wrinkledness and roundness, both in the pure and in the hybrid rounds, we shall find that the matter is not by any means so simple. The starch grains of pure round and wrinkled peas have already been dealt with. Those of the round are elongate and entire, those of the wrinkled are circular and compound, the number of component pieces varying between 2 and 8, the commonest number being 6.
