On the Nature and Origin of Life

Hilde S. Hein
4.9/5 (34988 ratings)
Description:Here's an introductory book for students of philosophy & biology. It explores many viewpoints from which the concept of life may be studied & illuminates the relationship between philosophical inquiry & science. As Hein points out, the biologist takes it for granted that the creatures studied are alive & asks by what mechanisms they maintain or perpetuate themselves, & how they came to develop particular evolutionary characteristics. He doesn't ask what it means to be alive in the 1st place. The more philosophically inclined theoretician asks "What is life? What are we saying of a thing when we say that it is alive?" Hein gives us a study of man's attempts thru the ages to formulate a theory of the nature of life & its origin, & analyzes the four major theories of the past & present (vitalism, mechanism, spontaneous generation & biopoesis) & their implications. Anyone curious about this most fundamental & continually mysterious topic will find this book of interest. Dr. Hein received a PhD in philosophy at the Univ. of Michigan, where she subsequently taught. She's since taught at LA State College & Tufts, & is now Assoc. Professor of Biology at College of the Holy Cross. She's author of numerous articles & is now writing on vitalism & mechanism.
