Description:Created from elements of I/JG 77 and IV/JG 1 in January 1942, Jagdgeschwader 5 "Eismeer" is one of the lesser known German fighter units of the Second World War. It nevertheless had an impressive operational history; the far northern theatre of war was characterized by vast empty spaces, isolation and extreme weather conditions. The primary objectives of the German mountain army and the Finnish troops were the capture of the vital Soviet port of Murmansk and the severing the Murmansk railway. For it was from Murmansk that the war materiel delivered by sea by the Soviet Union's western allies was transported to the front. The operational activities of Jagdgeschwader 5 were closely linked to the fate of this mountain army, providing air support, escorting bomber units and German convoys to Kirkenes and Petsamo, interdicting enemy supply traffic, engaging and defeating the enemy's fighter defense in the Murmansk area --- these were the main tasks given to JG 5.Both the aircrews and ground personnel had to perform their difficult tasks under extremely punishing conditions --- the desolate terrain, the unfamiliar climatic conditions, the long flights over tundra and icy seas (often more than 75 miles behind enemy lines), and an enemy who grew ever stronger and more determined. Casualties were heavy. A total of 124 pilots remain missing over the northern front and thirty-one are known to have been captured by the Soviets. The unit's successes were equally great. The Geschwader's ranks included a number of outstanding fighter pilots who marked JG 5 and accounted for a large percentage of its victories. Names like Bartels, Brunner, Carganico, Döbrich, Dörr, Ehrler, Linz, Mors, Müller, Norz, Schuck, and Weissenberger will always be associated with JG 5.JG 5's activities were not limited to the Polar Sea Front, however. I and IV Gruppen wee based on Norway's west coast, and in the spring of 1944, I/JG5 joined the Defense of the Reich after a brief interlude in Rumania and Bulgaria. The II Gruppe followed in summer 1944. Both units ere virtually wiped out in costly operations over the Reich and Normandy. The Zerstörerstaffel of JG 5, originally created from remnants of ZG 76 in Norway, led an independent life. Equipped with Bf 110 twin-engined fighters, this unit also fought under difficult conditions and made a significant contribution to the overall success of the Geschwader. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
