Description:Excerpt from Marie De Medicis and the French Court in the Xviith Century: Translated From the French of Louis BatiffolThe particular endeavour of this volume is not to present the complete "psychology" of Marie de Medicis - a task which would entail the consideration of the Queen's public life and of her later history, after her fall from power in 1617. As its title shows, this work aims at presenting the picture of a French Queen surrounded by her Court, between the years 1600 and 1617, when Marie de Medicis was Queen and Queen-Regent - a period of particular interest, because one in which a new dynasty, but recently emerged from the throes of civil war, had not yet suffered the fate which buries the individuality of princes beneath the artificiality of courts and courtly etiquette. Under Henry IV., and for some years after his reign, the Court of France offers the picturesque spectacle of a great lord's household - royal in outward show, internally the home of a burgher. The King's peculiar character invested him with a manner and habit very different from the old world Valois elegance, and the future pomposity of Louis XIV. While part of the interest of this study lies, therefore, in its picture of real and original social conditions, certain less special conditions will also be brought upon the scene. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
