Knox, as the Catholic apologist, displays to the full that learning and wit which brought him eminence in so many intellectual fields. "I am glad that the letters are to be republished," writes Sir Arnold, "for they may help the kind of reader whose position is roughly what mine was when you and I began our correspondence."
