Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one.
