The worms in the Walled Garden continue to claim more victims, most particularly General Lord Alexander Staghorn, a hero from the Peninsular Wars and who was of ‘considerable consequence about Town’. Mr Jaffey remains convinced that the servants are plotting a heinous campaign against their betters, and commissions the services of Mr Weavor and young Tom Scraggs to spy on Mr Kingsley and the cook, Mrs Briggs. Lord Malcotte struggles to contain the predatory Count Ludovico Traditore and protect the maid from falling victim to his desires. However, he begins to find the need to contain more than the Count, as he finds himself increasingly a ‘victim’ of her enchanting beauty. Malcotte Hall is an eccentric, postmodern parody of a Victorian novel written through the eyes of a naïve narrator.
