Description:Many of this author's stories for girls have dealt with a recent high school graduate on her first job discovering her career and romance. This follows true to that form. Mindy Knight comes to New York after finishing Secretarial School and gets a position on a large fashion magazine, but quickly learns that neither the city nor the job are as glamorous as they sound. The magazine's policy is to start staff members with the dreary job of answering letters but eventually Mindy moves up to assist the Coordinator, and the two girls with whom she had worked go into other departments. There is a good indication of the variety of work involved in assembling the material for a fashion magazine, the challenges as well as the drudgery, and to some extent, the interplay of personal ambition, gossip, and office routine (A Calculating Miss, also reviewed in this issue did this better, though). On off hours Mindy becomes disillusioned, then reconciled, to New York life, when she discovers that what she thought was a large salary doesn't go very far, that apartments are difficult to get and expensive, that it's not easy to find dates, the problems of dressing correctly within a narrow budget, etc., but learns to enjoy herself. There is an unnecessary detailing of parties and minor social events, and tedious soul-searching about the relative importance of clothes, which drag out the minor story, but it does at least offer a fairly reasonable portrayal of the young working girl.(from Kirkus Review)We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
