Description:In 1887, a young boy was born into a Tamil household in Erode, a town in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. India was still under the grip of the British Raj, and it was largely unaware of the mathematical progress being made in Europe. Yet, destiny had other things in mind for the young child. By the age of twelve, he taught himself trigonometry through the works of S. L. Loney, learning topics considered advanced even for the college level. Without access to much of the mathematical theorems already discovered at the time, the young boy achieved a miracle: he rediscovered them on his own, even going so far as to rediscovering Euler’s Identity without any sort of formal education. By 17, he’d become a formidable mathematician, having researched Bernoulli numbers and the Euler–Mascheroni constant independently. Despite being awarded a scholarship to study at the Government College at Kumbakonam, the young scholar dropped out after failing at other subjects. It was as if fate drove every ounce of intellect he had solely into mathematical prowess. His achievements drew the attention of the President of the Indian Mathematical Society who sent samples of his work to three academics at the University of Cambridge. The young mathematician was invited to Cambridge, where he became a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Yet, like the brilliance of his mathematical skills, his life too seemed to speed past him. He died at the age of 32, compiling nearly 3900 identities, equations and other results independently. In that short lifetime, he reinvented mathematics, displaying an innate skill for the subject that hadn’t been displayed in recorded history.
