HAD Jesus no mission in the interior place besides that of accompanying thither the penitent one who died beside him? He who on earth went about doing good, did he cease those errands of love at his death, his change of worlds? Even while hanging on his cross he prayed for those who crucitied him, provided his mother with a home, and appointed a journey to paradise with a poor penitent. Would such a one be idle when released from the flesh and gone to the paradisiacal side of Hades, where the saved dead had been congregating through four thousand years? Jesus would not go and remain there unknown. The saved malefactor would announce his presence if no one else did. Dr. Whedon's thought that Christ was still in "the lowest depths of selfhumiliation," and there " remained until the moment of his resurrection, the beginning of his exaltation,"1 may all be conceded if any so desire to hold, and yet Christ might speak to the world of the dead whither he had gone. The work of atonement was complete, 1 Comm. in loc. 47 and its blessed results to those in the lower paradise might well be announced and expounded to them. The penitent one who went with Jesus to that abode would rejoice to hear the wondrous story, and so would unnumbered millions there around him. The angel Jehovah who appeared to patriarchs and prophets of old, for their and the world's good, could not have been silent when he reached the great retinue of penitent ones, gathered from all ages and all lands into the inferior paradise.
