From the AuthorI have known the McGuire story most of my life. McGuire and I were raised in Sebring, Florida and graduated from the same high school. I waited 25 years for someone to write the story and then spent 25 years researching and writing this book with the help of McGuire's widow and other family members. I had access to McGuire's service record and log book where McGuire kept meticulous notes. McGuire's 201 file even included a record of money owed to him from players in the 24-hour-a-day alert shack poker game. I traveled from one end of the country to the other and conducted hundreds of interviews, some as late as the fall of 1998. From the Back CoverWHO WAS TOMMY McGUIRE ? Tommy McGuire was one of the men the Air Force can never forget. ....We will find it more difficult to carry on without him. General George C. Kenney, WWII Commander, USAF, Pacific Area He was one of the ablest officers I have known and one of the finest pilots I have ever flown with. I had hoped to see him again in this country and continue the friendship which began in that Hollandia Jungle. Charles A. Lindbergh, in a letter to Marilynn McGuire .....Tommy McGuire was the consummate combat leader. He was daring and yet careful of his men, he was proud---not boastful. He was decisive, yet flexible. He was caring, yet exacting, as a leader has to be. This is leadership born of deeds, and uncommon valor. Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, at McGuire AFB, NJ, 1986 About the AuthorCharles A. Martin knew McGuire when both were children--McGuire was older. Martin has been a pilot since age 17, Univ. of Fla. graduate, Air Force veteran.
