The artist’s non-object Works, fashioned from the “material” of light into spaces that address the nature of perception, are examined. The Works discussed range from his 1967 projected light pieces, through the full-space installation pieces, to his largest work-in-progress, the Roden Crater project.Turrell’s work exists in the real between the physical limitations of vision and the learned limits of perception. He is an experienced pilot, whose vision has been influenced by his life in the sky.James Turrell graduated from Pomona College in 1965 and received his M.A. from Claremont Graduate School in 1973. His work has been exhibited throughout the world. Major exhibitions include the Pasadena Art Museum, 1967; Whitney Museum, 1980, Amsterdam, 1976; Whitney Museum, 1980; Leo Castelli Gallery, 1981; the Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle, 1982; Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, 1983; and the Capp Street Project, San Francisco, 1984.In 1984 Turrell was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, one of the first such awards ever made to a visual artist.
