This is an InstaRead Summary of Double Down by Mark Halperin & John Heilemann. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Prologue Obama is practicing a mock debate with John Kerry, the senator of Massachusetts, in preparation for a debate against Mitt Romney to be held in New York in two days time. The 2012 election is three weeks away. After a horrific loss in the Denver debate, Obama desperately needs to perform in New York. However, he is looking just as bad as he was in Denver. His advisors are very worried and fearful that he will not be able to pull a win and the favor of the crowd even though he has always been able to do so in tight situations in the past. Romney, on the other hand, having achieved renewed vigor after his victory in Denver, is feeling very confident. The American people are split almost directly down the middle. An analogy between a casino and the election is given, with each side having gambled and “doubled down” on their candidates, and now the rest of the chips are in the hands of the American people. Part One 1: Mission Accomplished Birtherism has been an ever-present issue both before and during Obama’s presidency. In this chapter, he battles proving that he was indeed born in Hawaii. A booklet found within his mother’s possessions does not suffice, but eventually he releases the “long-term certificate” to the public, dispelling any further controversy and rumors. In this process, he takes down Donald Trump, who had been very persistent in this matter, even toying with the idea of running for president based off of the issues surrounding birtherism. It is claimed that Obama had inherited the country in a very weak state, with the economy in the tank. During his first two years, things had improved, but only very slightly, and high-unemployment was still very present. Obama feels that decisions he made as president during this time were the right ones, although there was a very high political price to pay. He was slandered and assaulted by Republicans in the media, and his approval rating had slipped. Within the White House, Obama had made some personnel changes to formulate a team that he felt comfortable working with. He also started working more cohesively with the Republicans. The beginning of 2011 was looking good for Obama in the ratings, and he was ready to take on the reelection game. However, he soon becomes distracted by issues both at home and abroad. With that being said though, his secret and successful plan to take down Osama bin Laden was considered an amazing accomplishment and achievement. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
