Speedos, Tattoos, and Felons

Gary V. Powell
4.9/5 (16801 ratings)
Description:In Speedos, Tattoos, and Felons, prize-winning author Gary V. Powell gives us a novella in three stories that serves as a prequel to his 2012 debut novel Lucky Bastard. Start with a little Southern Gothic, add a helping of Country Pulp, season with dashes of realistic Literary Fiction and Grit Lit, and belly up to the bar with Powell’s leading men, Jimmy McLean and Harley Hopewell. Trouble has a way of finding these savvy Vietnam Vets, and they have a way of setting trouble straight. Charlotte, NC may be inhabited by up-tight Christian bankers and high-tech computer jockeys, but get north of the city, up by the lake where Jimmy and Harley hang, and it’s a gnarly mix of mansions and trailer parks, NASCAR and pick-up trucks, fine wine and moonshine, swingers and born-again Christians waiting for The Rapture. In “Delivering the Goods,” Jimmy and Harley make what starts out as a routine delivery of windows to a NASCAR chief’s big house on the lake, only to have their notions of what we talk about when we talk about love tested to the max. Eleven in the morning, and Les greets them at the door, dressed in a Speedo and cowboy boots, his bikini-clad wife Dolly in tow and a half-empty bottle of Gin in hand. When Dolly invites them into a Jacuzzi surrounded by Tiki torches, the fireworks are about to begin. In “Boat to Build,” Harley is fresh out of a job, and his wife has left him to join a Wicca commune. To take his mind off things, he’s decided to build a boat in the front yard of his single wide. And not just any boat, but a thirty-six foot cabin cruiser. Meanwhile, Jimmy remains married to Aven, his wife of twenty-five years, but has a little extramarital something-something going on with Sandra, the tall blonde waitress at Bill’s Diner. Now, unlike Harley, Jimmy’s not a man who takes fornicating and adultery lightly, but the way he sees it Aven left him for Jesus long before he left her for Sandra. But things change fast when Sandra gets a tribal tattoo, so maybe it’s a good thing Harley needs help with that boat. Sometimes a man just needs to build. Owned by his old friend Beard McNeil, the Sweet Jasmine Motel isn’t what it used to be, having fallen into disrepair and suffering from competition from your Best Westerns and Comfort Suites. What’s left are the remnants of a 1990’s-era getaway, complete with fantasy suites now occupied by “felons and them that can’t get no kind of credit.” But following his divorce from Aven, the lawyers having taken all of Jimmy’s worldly possessions, he’s forced to take refuge there. The “Felony Motel” tells the story of what happens when Jimmy’s next door neighbor in the Queen Charlotte suite, leaves to visit the doctor and leaves him to look after her comely, but mentally disturbed, daughter. Not surprisingly, Jimmy has his hands full when the bad guys in the Swamp Fox, Davy Crockett, and Sir Walter Raleigh come calling. It’s a good thing Harley’s just a phone call away. Gritty as sandpaper, Powell’s stories and colorful characters juxtapose the New South with the Old. Good old boys and honkytonk angels rub shoulders with End Time Christians, prostitutes, and drug dealers. Extravagant and misspent wealth dwells next door to trailer parks and run-down restaurants. As an added bonus, Speedos, Tattoos, and Felons, contains the first chapter of Powell’s first novel, Lucky Bastard, which takes off shortly after the events of Felony Motel. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
