MEMOIRS OF WILLIAM NELSON PENDLETON, D .D., Annotated and Illustrated.

4.9/5 (18741 ratings)
Description:WILLIAM NELSON PENDLETON was General Robert E. Lee’s Chief of Artillery, and for the last five years of Lee’s life, his pastor.Pendleton is a significant figure in the annals of Christian Soldiers. Born into a well-connected Virginia family, he was early on attracted to a military life and consequently attended the United States Military Academy. He graduated in the Class of 1830. Among his distinguished classmates at “West Point” were Joseph E. Johnston, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. After a period of deep religious conviction and much soil-searching, Pendleton resigned from the army, taught for a time, and ultimately became a priest in the Episcopal Church. With the opening of the War Between the States, he joined the Confederate army where he became Chief of Artillery. After the War, he served as rector of Grace Church in Lexington, Virginia, a position he held until his death in 1883.This book presents a thorough and intimate portrait of William Nelson Pendleton as only a daughter could paint. She deals not only with the biographical details of her father’s life, but also with the public criticisms made by General Longstreet regarding Robert E. Lee’s leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg. The reading of this book is beneficial to the historian in that it provides a quite complete account of the action seen by the Rockbridge Artillery; but it is so much more than a mere historical recall of events. It lends understanding into the cultural, religious, and social values of a Southern family during the mid-Victorian period. The book also affords inspirational reading for those currently experiencing great trial or trouble and exemplifies how faith enabled the Pendleton family to endure incalculable adversities. The editorial team of theologian Dr. Gary Roper and historian Lucy Booker Roper have added a wealth of annotative material to Mrs. Lee’s work – presented in such a way so as not to digress or subtract from the original manuscript, but to enhance the reading enjoyment of it. Latin and archaic phrases are explained and photographs and illustrations have been added to make the years recorded “come alive” for the reader. Two time line study guides of events are included, as well as an essay discussing the physical ailments that William Nelson Pendleton bore during his lifetime. The book concludes with a choice sermon by the rector which will hearten and strengthen the reader. It is entitled, “The Refreshing Grace of the Gospel.” Many extras are in this book. It provides a comprehensive look at the entire life of William Nelson Pendleton.Although some puerile historians of the post-modern sort find it trendy to poke fun at the “lost cause,” and to make light of Pendleton’s abilities, one fact remains: Robert E. Lee was obviously pleased and satisfied with Pendleton’s performance, and wrote commendations of him on several occasions for his innovations (he started a “horse infirmary” which saved the lives of hundreds of horses) and his ability to do much with extremely limited resources. Lee paid Pendleton the ultimate compliment when he chose him as one of the commissioners to draw up surrender terms with the staff of General Grant. While William Nelson Pendleton may not “measure up” to the impossible standards of armchair generals in the guise of academic historians and commentators who fault him, his talents were appreciated by the one who really mattered – Robert E. Lee – the man who stands head and shoulders above us all.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
