Description:BOUGAINVILLE, LOUIS-ANTOINE DE, Comte de BOUGAINVILLE, army officer; born 12 Nov. 1729 in Paris, France, son of Pierre-Yves de Bougainville, member of the king’s council and notary at the Châtelet, and Marie-Françoise d’Arboulin; married 27 Jan. 1781 Marie-Joséphine de Longchamps-Montendre in Brest, France, and they had four children; died 20 Aug. 1811 in Paris and was buried in the Pantheon with full military honours on 3 September.In January, 1756, he was elected member of the British Royal Society, an extraordinary honour for so young a man, and a foreigner at that. Early in this same year he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Montcalm with the rank of captain, and in April the two left for Canada.Bougainville then commenced a journal and continued it throughout his stay in North America. It is the frank and detailed story of the activities, thoughts, and observations of an educated French gentleman who knew the English and their language and was a member of the French high command in Canada.
