My past is far from perfect, it's quite imperfect, but I wouldn't want it any other way. I like to believe it makes me what I am: human, fallible and authentic, which from an observer's POV could just as easily read: dumb, weak and superficial. Well, we all need to be who we are and not what and whom we think we have to be to please people around us, right? We're not living our lives for others, something we forget at our peril, but so, so easy to lose track of. If there is a God (which I'm sure there isn't) or any notion of a purposeful destiny, then I thank him (or her or it) on bended knee for making me an Englishman and being raised in a culture that is fundamentally individual, has the sense to acknowledge the importance of fraternity and last but not least possesses the most flexible and expressive language on the planet. Without that final offering I couldn't have spent eight years of my life in France nor written this book - my unconventional contribution to the craft of teaching.
