Kate O’Donnell, a young Irish nurse from a conservative rural background, is devastated when she finds out that her boyfriend, Joey Maguire, has left abruptly for Madrid to fight in the civil war on the republican side. In an effort to be reunited with him, Kate volunteers her services to the Spanish Medical Aid Committee; however, on arriving in Spain she finds herself assigned not to a Madrid hospital as expected, but to a village backwater hundreds of miles from the capital. The story follows Kate’s attempts to surmount the difficulties of meeting Joey in war-ravaged Spain, and her deepening relationships with the members of her medical team, including two sympathetic English nurses, an authoritarian Australian matron and a committed Spanish surgeon. The increasing intensity of the war demands that Kate’s team relocates to field hospitals close to some of the war’s bloodiest encounters, putting almost unbearable strains on the team, and bringing Kate into conflict with some of her colleagues but closer to others.
