Nature Study and Science (Classic Reprint)

Gilbert H. Trafton
4.9/5 (26746 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Nature Study and Science The increasing importance of science in modern life is naturally compelling the study of more science in our schools. For a number of years considerable attention has been paid to science in the high schools. In recent years general science has found its way quite universally into the junior high school, where it is taught chiefly in the last year, the ninth grade. There are indications here and there that eventually it will be spread out over the seventh and eighth grades also and made into a three-year course. The next logical step will be the introduction of more science into the intermediate grades, which feel above them the stimulation of the general science work being done in the junior high school and below them the urge of the nature-study work being done in the primary grades. The intermediate grades must bridge the gap between these two extremes by working out a course that will contain elements from both movements, harmonize them, and advance the child from the simple nature-study interest to the interest in useful and applied scientific knowledge. In past years the tendency in the intermediate grades has been to emphasize too much the study of the plants and animals and to neglect the physical sciences.
