I have found many of my own friends who actually believed the unfounded imputations contained in the Prospectus; and one of my most valued friends has written to me to inquire how I could engage myself and him in any concern which was liable to so serious an accusation, proceeding (as he believes) from the oldest and greatest banks in Scotland. I have, therefore, no recourse, in justice to myself and to those who act along with me, but to give a public answer.
