Its design is to give a history of the ancient family of "Boyt" or "Boyd" of the Old World and their descendants in America. To preserve their tradition, gather up the fading memorials of the past, and transmit them to those who shall succeed us. Prior to the year of 1884, or before I published my first edition and commenced to investigate my lineage, which was not done for the purpose of publishing the same in book form, but done only for my own satisfaction, that I might learn the true character of my ancestors and of those who honorably bore the name of Boyd. But, becoming interested in the work and meeting at that time so much success, far beyond my expectation, in obtaining information from Scotland and Ireland pertaining to the first families of the Boyds of those countries, as well as those in my native land, and resting under many solicitations from others, I decided to continue my researches and print what information I could obtain, that it might not become lost to the coming generations of descendants that will follow after us. If I had known at that time the difficulties I had to encounter and overcome, and the expense to be incurred, the years of toil to be spent, which many would have shrunk back appalled at the magnitude of the undertaking in the preparation of that little book. As it caused me to write more than a thousand letters to all parts of America, as well as to the Old World and to travel many miles to investigate records of their native places, and to obtain information from church and church yards as well as family records.
