I might have exploited some of my own pedagogical fads, but from my experience with the teachers of the state, I take it they have enough good judgment to properly use this manual, without any worry on my part as to the orthodoxy of the methods employed. It has been my chief endeavor to gather and present geographical information, and the only suggestion I make is, so far as possible, the fact and the reason thereof shall go hand-in-hand. I know of no other region whose physiography is so interesting as that embraced in New York and the New England States, and I have therefore dwelt much on its physical geography, past and present. Inasmuch as the st ate owes its commercial supremacy mainly to certain of these physiographic features, I think it well to impress their importance upon the attention of the student.
