This I do at the present time, not because I think my work is all done, but because this survey should be made while my powers are still unabated. A minor reason for the publication of the volume is that as an autobiography (which it really is) it will sere to bring before the minds of the present generation a vivid picture of the conditions of life during the last half of the nineteenth century, when most of these readjustments referred to were being made.
