D: Professor of the English Language and Literature at University College, London In the autumn of 1894 the executors of the late Henry Morley placed in my hands all the family papers which were thought to be of biographical interest. Examination of these proved that it would be possible to tell the story of his early life in his own words, and with sufficient detail to exhibit the development of his mind and character. To have fully carried out this plan would, however, have required two substantial volumes instead of one, and much compression has been exercised in the first part of the book. But all his letters have been carefully read, and, as far as possible, they have been left to convey their own message. For the second part I have had to gather materials from many sources, and thanks are due to Professors Arber and Moyse, to the Rev. H. E. Dowson and the Rev. L. P. Jacks, to Miss Day, Miss Buckland, Miss Shipley, and Miss Morison, to Mr. B. P. Neuman, Dr. James Gairdner, Mr. H. R. Fox Bourne, Mr. E. W. B. Nicholson, Dr. H. Bond, Mr. T.
