Description:Newton Booth Tarkington was an American novelist and dramatist best known for his novels "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Alice Adams," winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1919 and 1922 respectively. He is one of only three novelists who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, the other two being William Faulkner ("A Fable," in 1955, "The Reivers," 1963) and John Updike ("Rabbit Is Rich," 1982, "Rabbit at Rest," 1991). "The Magnificent Ambersons" is the second novel in the Growth trilogy, which includes "The Turmoil" and "The Midlander" (later retitled "National Avenue"). In 1925, "The Magnificent Ambersons" was adapted to film for the first time with the title Pampered Youth. In 1942, the novel was adapted to film a second time in an acclaimed production written and directed by Orson Welles. A third adaptation, the 2002 TV movie produced by the A&E Network, was based on the original screenplay by Orson Welles.
