Home to nearly 75,000 residents it was once an industrial center with jobs for over 150,000 people. RCA, Campbell Soup, New York Shipyard were among nine international corporations in Camden. Somewhere along the route the city lost its way. Riots, crime, drug dealings and murder ate away the blue collar family structure of its eight square miles. The city which was home to America's poet, Walt Whitman, became a wasteland. It became dangerous and all too often deadly to be on the streets of Camden. Several times in the past decades it would rank #1 in crime. When it failed to make the top spot it would often manage to be in the top five. At one time nearly 500 active drug sets were in operation. Mayors, cops and school leaders were often on their way to prison for corruption. Camden was often in the national headlines and usually for yet another outlandish occurrence. National writers warned, "Don't go there." Even Walt Whitman wrote, "I have just spent the most miserable year of my life (in Camden)." It would not get better a century later.
