Miss Monique Benoit proves to have talents both in and out of the kitchen. When he invites her to help him on a case, he discovers that her perceptiveness in seeing a connection between seemingly unrelated events and her ability to notice nuances of behavior have a positive effect on his ability to predict his prey’s actions. In the case described here, a ship has been stolen from London Harbor and the captain’s lifeless body has been found floating nearby. Doctor Zeigler’s search for the stolen ship, and the boy who was taken hostage along with the ship, leads him on an odyssey to the West Coast of Africa. There, he must search among men who attach little value to any life beyond their own. Tracing the movements of the ship as it comes and goes between the Mediterranean Sea and several English ports becomes a guessing game where Doctor’s Zeigler’s only tool is his understanding of what the man who took the ship is likely to do next. A connection between the two cases emerges when the kidnapped boy manages to get a message off the ship by a most ingenious means.
