Description:Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society: At the Semi-Annual Meeting, Held in Boston, April 29, 1874 This statement is from a letter of inquiry respecting our proposed publication of Cotton Mather's manuscript account of the case of Mercy Short, a case similar to that of Mar garet Rule, but of greater interest and fuller details. It will be remembered that the account of Margaret Rule was not published bv Mather himself, but by his enemy Calef, who, by some means, obtained possession of it. The story of Mercy Short, from an endorsement upon it, appears to have been privately circulated among friends, but there is nothing to show that Mather intended it for publication.
