Description:Excerpt from Jottings on Australia: With Remarks on the California Route to New York and Liverpool As promised, I have kept and compiled, as well as circumstances permitted, a Journal of my journey from Adelaide, South Australia, mid Melbourne, Vic toria, and Sydney, New South Wales, thence by the California route to New York and Liverpool. Pro bably you may think that I have been too minute in some respects, and many little things may appear trivial at first sight; but as it is intended for inspec tion by friends in England and elsewhere, as well as yourselves, you will readily see my object. I Wish to impress particularly on English friends the fact, that Australia is not such a wilderness as some suppose, and that one can travel from the Antipodes to the old country by steamboat and railway in com parative comfort and without fatigue: hence my frequent allusions to the style of colonial houses and buildings, fitting up of cabins and carriages, supply and quality of edibles and drinkables, prices, and so on.
