Elliot Woodward's Eighteenth Sale Having been allowed by Mr. Woodward to make this catalogue in my own way, choosing whatever I found to suit my taste, and rejecting almost as much for want of room, I shall continue to exercise the same freedom here, addressing myself now to that republic of amateurs, popularly known as Coin Collectors. On almost every page will be found something worthy of compe tition, commencing with the proof tokens of the French Repub lic (no. 18) and continuing with the fine Liberia pennies and half-pennies, and the Victoria and Chili patterns (nos. 20 to 24) under the head of Foreign Copper Coins and Tokens to No. 150. In the first series of cents are many of the very best quality. I have tried to give an exact idea of each one in the description and, although far from claiming to be less liable than other men to make mistakes, yet I trust no one will be misled by me. A good deal has been said on this weighty topic, yet surely there is nothing occult about it. It would seem that ordinary intelligence and candor, joined to sufficient experience, ought to qualify the average man, without unduly straining his understanding, to write a reliable description of a cent.
