In the autumn and winter of 1848-9 Mr. Fox delivered a course of Lectures on The Religious Ideas. These were published in one volume, under that title, in 1849; and they form the concluding part of the eighth volume of this series. The various strictures which the work drew forth from writers of very diverse opinions in theology, subsequently induced Mr. Fox to devote at least six other courses of lectures, forty-six in number, to its defence and further exposition. Of these, four courses are published, for the first time, in this volume. The remain ing two courses - on, 1, The Scriptural Expression of The Religious Ideas and, 2, Moral Philosophy in connection therewith - will form the first part of the tenth volume. Like all the lectures previously published, they were reported by a stenographer; but they have all received the benefit, to some extent, of Mr. Fox's own revision. Viewed in con nection with The Religious Ideas and with each other, they are of considerable value and interest, as expressing his final convictions, and exemplifying his happiest methods of conducting theological controversy.
