He often expressed grave fears Of decline in Canadian public life were British ideals to lose their power and in uence in the Dominion. In Parliament he was one of those who urged generous public support, by the Government, to scientific research and intellectual advance, and was ready on all occasions to advocate the cause Of literature and culture amongst our people. He regarded the Presidency of The Royal Society of Canada, to which he was elected in 1909, as one of the greatest honours received by him during his long life.
