Membre de l'expedition allemande au Nanga Parbat dans l'Himalaya en 1939, il fut interne en Inde par les Britanniques au declenchement de la 2 Guerre mondiale. Il s'echappa en 1944 et gagna le Tibet interdit, arrivant a Lhassa en 1946, avec son compagnon Peter Aufschnaiter. Il devait y sejourner jusqu'en 1951, travaillant pour le compte du gouvernement tibetain et frequentant l'elite aristocratique du pays. Il devint l'ami du jeune dalai-lama et de sa famille.
