If the patient is now allowed to assume the erect position, and should walk about, the weight of the body above the seat of the disease will either reproduce the inﬂammation or cause absorption of the bodies of the vertebrae and consequent deformity. To prevent this some mechanical support is necessary to keep this weight off the diseased bones and to retain the body in a natural position.
