He was a close friend of thelate Lieutenant General Les Kosem, a Cambodian Chamwho directed the armed struggle movement (FULRO)against Sai Gon from 1964 to 1975 in order to regain theindigenous people’s rightful status in Central Viet Nam. Asa result of their friendship, Prof. Lafont sponsored anumber of FULRO members for academic studies in France. My presence at the Sorbonne in 1972 was a part ofthis gesture. Prof. Lafont guided me throughout myacademic career until I graduated with a doctoral degree in1986. He he also helped me transition from a rural life inthe Third World to the modern life in Paris. He taught mehow to live as a citizen in a modern and democraticsociety, how to observe and reason matters from ascientific point of view, and helped me become a scholar ofthe lost kingdom of Champa.
