Le jeune Rene quitte assez tot le chemin de l'ecole, mais obtient pourtant son certificat d'etudes en 1940, et commence a travailler a Paris des l'age de quinze ans. Entre banlieue grise, quotidien ferroviaire, la vie ne semble pas lui offrir ses plus belles perspectives. De manutentionnaire chez un editeur, a coursier en pharmacie, en passant par apprenti foudrier, il alterne ces petits boulots qui marqueront parfois l'inspiration de l'ecrivain. En 1944, alors qu'il a moins de dix-sept ans, la guerre le trouve, ou c'est plutot lui qui la trouve en s'engageant volontairement.
