Description:[From the Author’s Preface] My choice of twelve judges is necessarily an arbitrary one, and the only excuse I can offer is that each of them interests me in a special degree. The fact that I treat them purely as judges and not as authorities on church or state is an innovation, but when all is said and done, Coleridge did not attain the position of Lord Chief Justice because he was an ardent churchman, and Cockburn is not remembered for his political speeches, but because he prosecuted Palmer and presided over many notable trials. I have not, of course, attempted to give anything like a complete account of all the celebrated trials with which the names of my twelve are indissolubly connected, but I hope that my selection will be found interesting. Judges are human enough to quarrel amongst themselves and their wit is sometimes sharpened by personal jealousies, but to the public they have ever presented a united front and justice has not suffered at their hands. When Lord Westbury was informed of the date fixed for the Tichborne trial, he remarked, “I am glad it is coming on soon because it must lead to the exposure of at least one impostor.” The reference was to Coleridge, whose incorrigible suavity irritated the ex-Lord Chancellor. But no harm is done by these fraternal differences. It is only when the public have cause to criticise the judges that their failings really matter. On the whole, however, there has been little reason for dissatisfaction, and if occasionally Parliament has been agitated by accusations of political partisanship against certain judges, no one has ever been able to prove that the impartiality of the Bench has been affected.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
