These improvements, and all that have taken place in American society during the last fifty years, I believe could never have taken place but for the New England high school, an institution planted on our shores by the Pilgrims of Plymouth and the Puritans of Boston, and which has extended itself across the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific shores. Its early adoption can be proved from history. We began with the high school, and not with the pri mary school.
