Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire

Stanley D. Chapman
4.9/5 (21301 ratings)
Description:Arkwright (1732-92), a leading figure of the Industrial Revolution, directly led the mechanisation of cotton spinning and weaving. Initially setting up a factory at Nottingham - centre of the hosiery trade - by 1771 he had established larger water-powered mills at Cromford near Matlock, eventually opening the huge Masson Mills complex in 1783. His early partners Need and Strutt went their separate ways, but Arkwright's determination in a fickle market proved profitable and eventually led to employment of some 800 hands. By 1897 the Mills had passed to the English Sewing Cotton concern, but production was to continue for almost a century more, until 1991. Today, much of the site has been transformed into a multiple retail village, conveniently located on the main A6: the oldest buildings have been refurnished with authentic textile machinery to present a local attraction - the Derwent Valley Textile Museum. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
