This novel is an attempt to spark understanding into people trapped by the lies of their world; this world being… Rig-Life. Johnny has evolved with his environment, adapted and changed in order to survive. Deep in his subconscious he knows this person he has become is taking him over completely, but he remains ignorant; ignorance is the fuel to his survival, without it he will realize he is living this lie, and that reality seems impossible for his ego to conceive. Johnny has a dream, a dream that was trying to tell him that he must wake up before he loses his integrity, his self… all to a lie… a lie naively structured around his perception of how his image is perceived. His dream was a metaphor for what is happening to him in reality. It was his subconscious telling him, it is time. A warning… Johnny does not remember the dream and awakens to a day with seeming indifference. He has grown bitter with the person he has become, the person he has evolved to be, and fuelled by the rig-life environment, the lies, the antics, he projects this bitterness and hatred inwardly. Johnny finds out that one of his friends, an old man named Denzie, is dealing with the death of his wife; a wife that only died days before the old man boarded the rig. In a conversation early in this day, Denzie speaks to Johnny about the person he himself has adapted into in order to survive in this environment; questioning the integrity of his life and motives, also voicing fears of his death exposing the ignorance of his life. Denzie feared when his end came he would feel nothing, for the lie that has consumed his life would have disabled him to feel, even his last breath...This conversation sets Johnny’s mind questioning his own integrity, questioning death, questioning life, questioning himself. The puzzle of Denzie, boarding the rig so soon after his wife’s death is a mystery that Denzie can only explain to Johnny as a need for structure, but this fuels Johnny’s mind to question deeper, challenging structure and revealing more about himself, than that of Denzie’s motives. Johnny questions everyone and everything, over thinking and under-thinking and thinking and thinking, almost driving himself insane striving to decrypt the enigma of his life. In fighting for this understanding, the cynical and bitter protagonist exposes, not just the foul language, slang and antics born of rig-life but also the hidden truths and ignorance thereof... In battling with himself, the world, God; he is drawn into dealings with death, fear, ignorance, suicide, fate, hatred, shock, conspiracy, injury, destiny, anxiety, love… All of which force his mind and body, his instinct and ego, to find some kind of balance for understanding. Life on the oil rigs is an intensely incestuous world of lies, self-deceit and power-play, this world gives birth to a kind known as “Riggers”, shown with slight distinction in this novel as a family of Boars, Cousins, and Brothers; oh, and the occasional Hermit.
